Carlos T. Moraes, Ph.D. is the Esther Lichtenstein Professor in Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Following undergraduate and Master degrees at the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, he performed his Ph.D. in Genetics and postdoctoral training at Columbia University, NY. His group works on the molecular pathogenesis and treatment of mitochondrial disorders. His early work defined the molecular lesion of several mitochondrial disorders caused by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations. He has also studied different aspects of mtDNA damage during normal aging. In the last decade, his lab has focused on using gene editing approaches to eliminate mutant mtDNA in vivo.
Dr. Moraes has trained several Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows who are now leading scientist in the USA and abroad.
