Dr. James Cairns is a physicist, oceanographer, and lifelong inventor. He has more than 60 issued U.S. patents and at least as many foreign ones granted and pending. His most important contributions to technology have been for deep-sea power and communication networks. Those inventions have enabled offshore oil and gas operations to move into previously unreachable ocean depths, thereby greatly expanding the global area available for energy production. He co-founded two significant invention-based companies. The first sold to Lockheed-Martin Corporation in 1985; the second sold to Teledyne Technologies in 2009. Currently he is owner and president of Pontus Subsea Connectors, LLC located in Ormond Beach, Florida. Cairns has extensive experience in developing, protecting, and commercializing intellectual property.
