Profile

Arthur Hebard earned his PhD in experimental physics from Stanford University in 1972, focusing on a project to find evidence of fractional charge (quarks) in matter. He worked as a technical staff member at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1972 to 1996, specializing in thin-film physics and systems in reduced dimensions. In 1996, he transitioned from industry to academia by joining the University of Florida, where he is now a Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Physics. Hebard has published over 280 refereed papers on topics such as graphene, fullerenes and related compounds, superconductivity, dilute magnetic semiconductors, magnetism in thin films and at interfaces, interface capacitance, magnetocapacitance of complex oxides and semiconductors, and magnetic molecules for quantum materials. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His awards include the 2008 APS McGroddy Prize and the 2015 APS Oliver E. Buckley Prize. He served as an Associate Editor for Reviews of Modern Physics from 2005 to 2023 and was recognized in the APS 2025 Outstanding Referees Program of the Physical Review journals.
