ContactProfile
Dr. Subrata Roy, a professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida, is an international leader in plasma-based flow control and microbial decontamination technology. He is the founding Director of the Applied Physics Research Group at the University of Florida. He is also the founder and President of SurfPlasma, Inc. that innovates eco-friendly methods to destroy biological and chemical contaminants, thereby improving the quality of water, air, food, clothing, and surfaces. Together with his students and collaborators, Dr. Roy's numerical and experimental research focusses on introducing various novel designs (serpentine, fan, and microscale) of atmospheric plasma actuators for flow mixing and turbulent flow control for drag reduction, active film cooling of turbine blades, and noise reduction; devising compact portable plasma reactors for space return missions, food safety, and microbial decontamination; pioneering wingless electromagnetic aircraft design; and hydrodynamic numerical models for micro and nanofluidics by incorporating Knudsen's theory.
Dr. Roy is an inducted Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a Fellow of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board in several journals including Nature Scientific Reports, Actuators, Frontiers in Physics and Astronomy. He has over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals and bound volumes on plasma flow control research. He is an inventor on 48 United States patent applications of which 36 have been issued. Dr. Roy also served as a nation appointed member of the US delegation to NATO Science and Technology Organisation working groups on plasma actuator technologies. His research program, totaling over $25M is funded by federal agencies like AFOSR, DARPA, NASA, NSF, DOE, ONR and industry. He served as the Forum Technical Chair for AIAA SciTech in 2018, Technical Discipline Chair for the 2016 AIAA SciTech Plasma Dynamics & Lasers Conference, the 48th Aerospace Sciences Meeting (for Thermophysics) in 2010 and the 36th AIAA Thermophysics Conference in 2003. Before his academic career, Dr. Roy spent 8 years in industry.
