Bio
Daejin Kim is an Associate Professor of Interior Architecture and Design at Florida State University, where his research sits at the intersection of environmental psychology, healthcare design, and aging in place. His work investigates how physical environments shape occupants' health, behavior, and well-being, translating evidence-based design principles into both rigorous scholarship and applied teaching practice.
Beyond Grab Bars Smart Home Technologies for Aging in Place
As the aging population grows, home modification has become a critical strategy for supporting older adults' functional needs and enabling aging in place. Yet traditional approaches such as grab bars, ramps, and light bulbs are static environmental interventions that fail to address the dynamic, individualized nature of functional decline. This presentation argues for a shift toward intelligent living environments that integrate smart home technologies, including in-home monitoring systems and smart lighting, with evidence-based design. These technologies support daily functional performance, enhance safety, and reduce caregiver burden. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology Acceptance Model, this presentation further examines how older adults perceive and adopt these solutions, ultimately making the case for proactive, personalized environments that advance independence and well-being.
